Problem Statement

You cannot imagine a peaceful world when its streets are full of hungry people. According to media reports, about 19 crore Indians go to bed hungry every night. Scores of people living in the Indian capital city, Delhi complained of having to go without a proper meal for days. The COVID-19 pandemic has made the situation even more terrible. The homeless, people in shelter homes, and people who lost their jobs during the lockdown, said access to food remained difficult. Some even forced to beg for money and having food.

Objective of the Program

The key objective of organizing hunger camps is offering nutritious food to people living on roads and in shelter homes so that they shall not go to bed empty stomach. To make these hunger camps work like nutrition camps for laborious people who are at the risk of protein-carbohydrate-energy malnutrition. To make available free juice, biscuits, vegetable rice, bread, etc. free of cost at different areas in the summers for heatstroke prevention.

Location

DAF is organizing hunger camps in various parts of Delhi NCR since its inception and also mobilizes its volunteers in other cities to organize such camps near construction sites and labour-intensive areas.

Outcomes

Easy availability of free and nutritious meal to the needy people. Those attending the hunger camps provided with a health mix of vegetable rice, biscuits and Juice. Some mothers, who work hard at various construction sites, take the food, satiate their hunger, and feed their children as well. They save their daily wages to fulfil other needs. Hunger camps also work like a motivation. More than 500 free meal drives have been organized since 2013 feeding hundreds and thousands of people.

Such hunger camps have been very effective because of their localized relevance in providing nutrition to those who actually need it. Evidence shows that a large number of people living on the roads and doing manual labour could save their daily wage due to such hunger camps. Some positive outcomes of these hunger camps are-

  • Nutritious food for mothers and children living on roads
  • No hunger-related stress in men and women
  • Money-saving
